What Flows in You?
I believe a joyful life is made up of joyful moments gracefully strung together by trust, gratitude, inspiration, and faith.
Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection p.81
As I connect to Brené's quote I'm listening to a beautiful song by Korean pianist Yiruma called, ""River Flows In You"" and the experience is moving. I am acutely present to the impact, importance, and meaning of ""joyful moments gracefully strung together by trust, gratitude, inspiration, and faith"" and I believe too these make up a joyful life. So many joyful moments in my life are related to the water. Whether Chip and I are at the ocean in Hawaii with my brother Ian and his family, or on a lake or river up in Montana with my brother Evan and his family, or if I'm swimming laps in a pool with a friend; magic happens. Joyful moments flow in and around me. Joy Flows. The originator of the concept of Flow, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, defines flow in his book Flow: The Psyhology of Optimal Experience, as:
The state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.
Further, Mihaly tells us that contrary to what we might think, the best moments in our lives (a state of Flow) aren't the passive, receptive, relaxing times, the best moments usually occur when our minds and bodies are stretched in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile. What does Mihaly mean? He means that we make the best experiences in our lives happen. I liken Flow to Brené Brown reinforcing in her book ""The Gifts of Imperfection"" that so many words we often use as nouns should be verbs. We make trust, gratitude, inspiration, faith, joy, love, connection, and so much more happen by making it flow in our lives. What flows in you?
What will you make Flow in You?
